Search Engine Marketing is a type of digital marketing which promotes websites and increases visibility on the search engines. The most commonly used search engines, on which SEM can be done are

  1. Google
  2. Bing
  3. Yahoo

Search Engine Marketing can be further subdivided into Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and Paid Search.

Paid Search marketing means you advertising on the search engines by paying them. There is certain amount of space that is allowed to the paid ads, which the competitors for each keywords have to bid for. Suppose for example you are thinking of buying a new phone for your self, but you don’t know which one is good for you, so you search for it on one of your favourite search engines. You type the specification you require on the search bar and what you see is that the ads on the top of the page are paid ones. These are basically by different sellers who are selling cell phones with your required specification. These paid ads are also present below the fold at the end of the results.

As an advertiser you are creating and publishing these ads through tools that are provided by these search engines. These can be

  1. Google Adwords
  2. Bing Ads
  3. Yahoo Gemini

These search engines, and most importantly Google have set up specific rules, which when followed will let your ads show up on the Search Engine Results Page (SERP).
